Pumpkins pumpkins pumpkins

November 1, 2012 By Jen Leave a Comment

Jasper was very excited the day two pumpkins arrived with the shopping. Although he had no idea what to do with them, they certainly amused him.

They were of course for calving for Halloween, not for eating. Although they are great value and easy to cook with, I’m afraid none of us are great pumpkin eaters.

So this is what I did:

Firstly I cut the top off, with Mr’s help and hollowed out the insides. This job always makes me wince. I do not like how it feels or smells.

That part out the way, I then drew on in marker pen the design I was going to do.

Lucy had requested a wold, and Neets wanted a cat.

I had decided to try something new. So instead of cutting the shapes out, I decided to take off the skin so there was still pumpkin flesh and not a big hole.

I did have some tools that the lovely Helen had given me, but I didn’t actually find them much help when it came to doing this. So instead I used my trusty small kitchen knife. This is not recommended for children.

I cut a little into the skin with the point of the knife, going round the outlines of the drawing. Then I scored the skin on the sections I wanted to cut off, then cut underneath them with the knife. This meant that just the skin came off and left some pumpkin flesh.

It was fairly easy to do, but requires patience. Although I didn’t have a lot of time, so I didn’t take the time to smooth away any cut lines. I also usually wash off the pen with nail varnish remover.

And here are the two finished pumpkins lit up. A wolf for Lucy and a cat for Neets.
