I don’t know about you, but there are certain utensils in the kitchen that have to be just so before I’m happy with them. One of which is a can opener. Something so simple, yet if it doesn’t do the job right, then it’s very frustrating.
So I decided to challenge the OXO Good Grips can opener. Would it impress or be yet another white elephant utensil clogging up the utensil drawer in the kitchen? It might sound a bit silly, and perhaps pathetic but I like a can opener to be easy to use, easy to clean, comfortable and so that it takes off the inner top of the tin, not the rim as well. Can openers that take the rim off as well scare me. It’s also got to be suitable for all the family, as we all do out bit opening tins.
When my last can opener broke I hunted out a decent looking one in Homebase. It was chunky, but looked good in stainless steel. It had a bottle opener on it, seemed sturdy, and generally fitted the bill for my needs. It cost in the region of £14, which I thought was rather a lot, but considered it worth it if it did the job.
Unfortunately it soon became apparent that this can opener was not up to my standard. It was very uncomfortable to use, almost hurt your fingers. Worse still was that it didn’t smoothly cut out the top of the tin. Instead it left a rough lip that meant that the entire top did not break free and be lifted off. It was still attached on a tiny bit. I found this very annoying, and didn’t like having to lift the lid and twist it off. Messy and a little dangerous.
So I was on the look out again for a better version. Lo and behold, along come OXO Good Grips. Laugh you may at this next statement, but I can easy say that in comparison the Good Grips can opener is like driving a Aston Martin, whereas the previous can opener was like an old Ford Fiesta!
Needless to say, the OXO Good Grips met my standards, and I am very happy with it. It’s not too heavy. It has smooth comfortable handles. The turning knob is chunky and comfortable to hold. It’s easy to clean and best of all it cuts out the inner top of the tin, effortlessly, cleanly and without a mess. It also has a bottle opener of course.
It’s fabulous to have a can opener that works well again. Hoorah for OXO!
